On October 30, 2023, a team of Allen & Overy litigators filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of a group of esteemed professors and scholars of federal habeas corpus law and civil procedure.
The brief supported a petition filed by Texas death row inmate Joseph Gamboa asking the Supreme Court to address a circuit split in an area of law that has vitally important consequences for prisoners seeking federal habeas corpus review. At issue is whether federal district courts can hear claims that prisoners’ court-appointed lawyers abandoned them during their federal habeas proceedings.
The A&O team included associates Megan Ines, Alan Billharz, and Ayyan Zubair.
