Luke is a Senior Scientific and Technical Analyst at Allen & Overy Belfast. Prior to joining A&O, Luke completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at Queen’s University, Belfast. His doctoral research incorporated a number of aspects of the chemical field and focused on the development of novel and industrially relevant, transition metal catalysts for aerobic alcohol oxidations.
Luke has extensive experience working within a research laboratory and is the co-author of two peer-reviewed scientific articles, including an academic feature article on the rapidly evolving field of nitroxyl radical catalysis.
His expertise covers many areas of the chemical sector, including green chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, inorganic, analytical and organic chemistry. He has an in depth knowledge in a range of analytical techniques, including, HPLC, GC, NMR, mass spectrometry, XRD and XPS.
Prior to commencing his Ph.D. research, Luke obtained a first class honours degree in chemistry with extended studies in Europe. During his degree program, Luke spent a year at the University of Zaragoza, Spain.
Since joining Allen & Overy in 2016, Luke has worked alongside the global legal team on a number of IP Litigation matters. His work has centred on technical research, including, the analysis of patents and scientific literature, monitoring competitor outputs, and locating and working with expert witnesses. In addition, Luke has worked to draft reports summarising the technical background of fields relating to IP litigation.
Luke has spent six months on secondment to the IP litigation team in A&O’s London office. Luke is currently studying for a postgraduate diploma in law, with a completion date of June 2022.
