A&O virtual conference – The global transition to a sustainable economy

On 28 April 2021, A&O hosted a global virtual conference “The global transition to a sustainable economy”. This was the second global sustainability conference the Firm has hosted and it kicked off a wider programme of virtual global events on this topic.

The conference agenda was divided into three distinct and complementary sessions, enabling participants from across the globe to attend live. Clients from APAC, EMEA and the Americas across the full spectrum of sectors attended on the day.

The conference content focused on what is truly driving the rise of sustainability/ESG – the transition of the whole economy to implement the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). We explored the key themes in sustainability/ESG over nine panel sessions, exploring topics such as the rise of green taxonomies, the financing of the transition, TCFD and TNFD, corporate governance and supply chains, litigation trends, ratings and data, the role of institutional investors and ESG prudential regulation.

The conference featured 21 external speakers, including keynote speaker Ashley Alder - Chair of IOSCO and CEO of the Hong Hong SFC, and Bill Coen - former Secretary General of the Basel Committee on Banking and Chair of the IFRS Advisory Council amongst a plethora of other senior and specialist speakers from a wide variety of relevant backgrounds. They were joined by 24 speakers from the A&O network (including A&O Consulting). We were delighted to bring so many of our clients and colleagues together from across the globe to discuss how to address the sustainability transition. It's clear that we're in a rapid phase of market, regulatory and policy evolution and understanding how best to navigate the complex mix of initiatives is crucial. The need to find regulatory and market-based solutions to global climate and other sustainability challenges has never been clearer.
