The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation in the application of laws protecting personal data on 8 November 2023,
The MoU aims to strengthen the pre-existing collaboration between these regulators established at fora such as the Global Privacy Assembly and the G7 Data Protection Authorities Roundtable. The MoU identifies the following areas for cooperation, among others:
- exchange of best practices and experiences;
- promoting engagement between data protection authorities and other digital regulators, such as competition and consumer protection authorities;
- implementation of joint research projects and publications;
- exchange of information regarding potential or ongoing investigations; and
- mutual assistance and joint investigation of cross border personal data incidents.
The MoU looks to further the regulators’ aim to collaborate globally to uphold individuals’ data protection and privacy rights but specifically excludes the sharing of personal data between the two regulators.
