German Renewable Energy Law (EEG) has ambitious targets for the amount of renewable energies that will supply the country’s electricity. However, conventional power plants remain essential to a secure supply and to meeting maximum demand.

Since renewables have a feed-in priority, it is inevitable there will be over capacity and shortcomings in generation. The current debate within the power sector is determined by discussions on new capacity mechanisms, development of the market design for electricity pricing and developments in extended transmission and storage capacities.
