Rebecca Thomson

Rebecca is a qualified practicing attorney in South Africa and recently qualified to practice as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Rebecca has experience in a wide range of commercial dispute resolution and litigation. Having worked as in-house counsel at Deloitte for four years, she has unique experience in audit and consulting-related disputes and regulatory investigations, advising multinational audit and consulting firms, and engaging with South Africa's audit industry regulator, the IRBA.

Rebecca also has significant experience in banking and financial-services disputes, insolvency and business rescue, mining law disputes and corporate investigations. Rebecca's experience in and recent focus on employment law feeds well into her corporate investigations work. Rebecca was recognised in the litigation category of the Best Lawyers publication in 2019 and 2020.

Representative matters

Coordinating and project-managing a global research project for a multinational media conglomerate, together with the Global Fund, on barriers to access to healthcare services for young people across multiple jurisdictions.

A major international bank on a fraud perpetrated by a derivatives trader through a stock exchange that caused the client to sustain millions of Rands in damages.

A foreign government on an international investigation to trace and recover money unlawfully transferred from the client’s investment company to various projects and companies all over the world, through a complex set of company structures and schemes.

Pro bono

Co-head of the Johannesburg office Pro-Bono Committee.

Working with the Gender Equality Commission on opposing an application by the owners of a wedding venue from having certain provisions of the Equality Act declared to be unconstitutional and void, to enable them to refuse to host same-sex weddings (previous firm experience).

Acting for a well-known non-profit organisation in an application to interdict and review the implementation of an e-tolling project in South Africa (previous firm experience).

Coordinating and project-managing a global research project for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, together with the Global Fund, on barriers to access to healthcare services for young people across multiple jurisdictions.
