Michael's practice focuses on advising foreign sovereigns, multinational corporations, and international organizations in connection with cross-border disputes and other issues of public and private international law.
Michael’s experience includes investor-State arbitrations before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), as well as commercial arbitrations before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), and the PCA. These cases have been conducted in English, Spanish, and French and have spanned various substantive areas, including renewable energy, aviation, infrastructure, oil and gas, transportation, mining, and environmental regulation. In addition to his disputes work, Michael regularly advises clients on diverse issues of international law and development, as well as companies struggling with exposure from geopolitical crises. His clients include several foreign sovereigns in Latin America and Europe, multinational corporations, and major international organizations. Michael also has experience in international trade and domestic litigation, and he maintains an active pro bono practice.
Michael previously served as Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, where he assisted the Court’s Secretary General and arbitral tribunals in inter-State, investor-State, and contract-based arbitrations.
