Matthias has over 25 years’ experience globally advising international sponsors, project companies and financiers on their commercial and financial arrangements for complex projects, with a strong focus on the renewables (including offshore wind, hydrogen and other green energy sources), natural resources and infrastructure sectors.

He has specialist expertise in project financing, particularly large-scale multi-sourced financings (involving multiple ECAs, MLAs and DFIs), acquisition financing, asset financing and structured financings generally. Matthias also has deep experience advising on project development, including joint venture formation and structuring, project contracts and related M&A.

Matthias is a strong advocate for the energy transition, and is considered a thought leader in his field. As the co-founder of A&O’s Hydrogen Interest Group, Matthias is active in thought leadership activities across the industry, and regularly engages with clients regarding the opportunities and challenges facing their businesses and decarbonisation strategies.

In addition to Tokyo where is he is currently based, and Seoul, Matthias has also practiced in the firm’s Beijing, Shanghai and London offices. He speaks English, Mandarin, French, German and some Japanese.
