Emma is a Science Technical Analyst at Allen & Overy Belfast. Emma has a PhD in Physics, which she completed at Queen's University Belfast.

Her doctoral research focussed on photonic integration within medical devices, specifically biosensors, where she worked on optimisation of a nanostructured surface within an optics based sensor. This involved surface biochemistry, extensive nanostructure fabrication and frequent surface characterisation through use of scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Additionally the work also involved significant computational modelling, in both MATLAB and simulation software, COMSOL Multiphysics.

Throughout her PhD and two postdoctoral roles, Emma has gained significant experience of working within different research environments, including industrial and clinical settings, developing optical sensor-based medical devices in both postdoctoral roles. The first involved developing suitable lateral flow devices for personalised medicine and the second tested an optical fibre based device for radiation monitoring during radiotherapy.

Since joining Allen & Overy in 2021, Emma has worked alongside the legal team on a number of IP litigation matters. These include analysis of patents for mapping against infringement claims, drafting of a product and process description and assisting fellow STAs with expert searches and other technical research. In addition, Emma has worked on prior art reviews for business development work and performed multiple IP due diligence reviews.
