Chris Burkett



Chris is a counsel in the ASEAN corporate team and is currently based in Bangkok. He advises on public and private M&A, joint ventures, private equity transactions and general corporate matters. He has been based in our London, Bangkok and Yangon offices and his main practice is inbound and outbound investment to, from and within ASEAN with a focus on investment in emerging markets. He advises U.S., European and Asian clients on all aspects of the investment cycle, from greenfield market entry and transformational M&A to strategic joint ventures and sales processes.

Chris’ recent experience includes advising clients on investment, divestment and operations in Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and other ASEAN countries across the insurance, banking, telecommunications, real estate, private equity, manufacturing and consumer goods sectors. He is consistently recognised by leading legal directories as an 'Associate to Watch' in Myanmar, with Chambers Asia-Pacific 2018 noting that he is "a recognised figure in the Myanmar-related corporate and private equity markets" and that with "his experience usefully straddling Myanmar and Thailand, he knows how to guide clients in these markets."

U.S. Treasury implements Final FIRRMA Regulations

This week, new regulations promulgated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury (the Treasury) went into effect to finalize and comprehensively implement the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act of 2018 (FIRRMA). These newly-amended regulations (the Final FIRRMA Regulations) both broaden the jurisdictional scope of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and institute key exceptions scaling CFIUS’s authority over certain foreign investments.
