The Telecommunications (Security) Act: some finality at last

Following a lengthy Parliamentary passage, the Telecommunications (Security) Act 2021 (the Act) received Royal Assent on 17 November 2021.

By way of reminder, the Act places stronger security-related duties and responsibilities on telecoms companies and grants Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, new enforcement powers.

Additionally, the Act gives the Secretary of State the power to impose directions on “public communications providers” in relation to high-risk vendors, which the Act refers to as “designated vendors”.
