Towards the “greenest” Batteries in the world?

The European Commission published its new EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability – Towards a Toxic-Free Environment on 14 October 2020.

This Strategy has two main goals:

  1. to boost innovation for safe and sustainable chemicals, and
  2. to strengthen, simplify and consolidate the existing EU chemicals legal framework in order to protect citizens, and address environmental and health concerns.

Built upon the findings of previous studies conducted by the European Commission, it envisions using both regulatory and non-regulatory means to address the most pressing concerns as well as preparing effectively for future hurdles.

This article gives a high level overview of the measures that can be expected as a result from this new Strategy across EU legislation, focusing on non-toxic material cycles, the EU legal framework to address environmental and health concerns, and the possible simplification and consolidation of it.
