The birth of the Republic of Southern Sudan - legal analysis

On Saturday 9 July 2011, the Republic of Southern Sudan became the 195th sovereign state. Other recent new countries include Kosovo, Montenegro and East Timor. There were less than 100 states in 1910 but over a thousand in Medieval times. Births of states often happen. The key questions relate to the succession of contracts, debts, concessions and sharing of assets on a partition.
