Are you sitting comfortably? Ofwat investigation highlights deficiencies in compliance practices and culture

On 25th June Ofwat announced that it was seeking to impose its largest ever penalty on Southern Water after a series of failings related to the operational management of a number of its UK wastewater treatment works.
In addition to deliberately misreporting data to Ofwat, the regulator concluded, inter alia, that the utility company had not made appropriate provision for effectually dealing with and treating wastewater, and had failed to put in place adequate systems of planning, governance and internal controls.
