Allen & Overy publishes seventh edition of The Business and Human Rights Review

Allen & Overy’s Human Rights Working Group is pleased to announce the publication of the seventh edition of The Business and Human Rights Review.
At a time when corporations are coming under increasing scrutiny from the public, shareholders, civil society groups, courts and regulators, this edition of The Business and Human Rights Review brings together diverse voices to discuss the role that businesses can, and often must, play in protecting, respecting and promoting human rights around the world. This edition of the Review focuses on the collaborative practices developed by major stakeholders in the field and the increasingly proactive participation of corporations in the debate surrounding the human rights responsibilities of the private sector.
This edition of the Review begins with an analysis of the human rights risks faced by industries with complex supply chains and multi-jurisdictional operations, such as the hotel industry, and the resources developed through stakeholder collaboration to address these risks.
Industry insight is provided in an interview with Caroline Meledo, Director of Corporate Responsibility and Human Rights at Hilton, who describes Hilton’s approach to human rights risks across the three core hospitality business functions: operations, supply chain management, and hotel development. Further industry insight is provided in a separate article by Sian Lea, managing director of Shiva Foundation, who discusses the hotel industry’s collaborative efforts to address the serious modern slavery risks it faces.
Collaboration and dialogue in the field is also furthered by regional law societies. Hanningtone Amol, CEO of the East Africa Law Society, provides a unique insight into the role of regional law societies in the promotion of business respect for human rights and in the development of better regional standards.
The Review also contains an interview with Margaret Wachenfeld, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Human Rights and Business, who discusses the growing consideration of human rights in financial regulation and the likely direction of regulation and relevant standards towards future convergence.
The Review concludes with reflections on recent developments and key trends in climate litigation and the climate change reporting landscape, and the benefits available to businesses if they opt for proactive disclosure.
