Allen & Overy wins International Law Firm of the Year for the fourth consecutive year at the ALB Philippine Law Awards 2019
It was a successful night for A&O at the fourth annual Asian Legal Business Philippine Law Awards, held on 22 November 2019 in Manila. As well as picking up the award for International Law Firm of the Year for the fourth year running, A&O also picked up the award for Finance Deal of the Year. The ALB Philippine Law Awards recognise the outstanding performance of private practitioners and in-house teams that have significantly contributed to the ever-evolving legal landscape of the Philippines.
A&O’s practice in the Philippines is going from strength to strength as we continue to grow our market profile and expand our cross-practice offering. We have more than 25 years’ experience in the Philippines and have acted for major Philippine conglomerates, banks, the Philippine government, government-owned and controlled corporations and other privately controlled corporations on complex and market leading transactions. It is this experience, bolstered by our comprehensive network of experts and offices in the region, that gives us a competitive edge and enables us to deliver unparalleled service to our clients.
Alun Evans, Corporate partner, said: “These wins illustrate the hard work and commitment of our Philippine team, as well as our wider APAC network. The Philippine economy continues to grow and we are well positioned in the market to advise our ever-growing cross-practice client portfolio as and when the need arises. Huge thanks to our clients in the Philippines, our international clients investing in the Philippines and the Philippines legal community. Without their support these awards would not be achievable”.
The Finance Deal of the Year award was won in respect of the loan facility for San Miguel Corporation’s acquisition of Holcim Philippines. A&O advised Standard Chartered Bank, DBS, Mizuho, MUFG and SMBC as mandated lead arrangers and underwriters on its USD2.15 billion acquisition facility for San Miguel Corporation for the purpose of acquiring Holcim Philippines, Inc, a cement producer listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. This transaction is considered to be the largest M&A deal in the history of the Philippine cement industry and winning this award is testament to the cutting edge legal advice and multi-practice offering we have in the Philippines.
Counsel Giancarlo Sambalido, commenting on the awards, said: “Our cross-border experience and well-rounded offering serves us well to provide clients with seamless, top-grade advice. We have seen an exciting year in the Philippines. The deal pipeline looks promising and we look forward to continuing our focus on growing our offering in the Philippines”.
