Antitrust practice wins two awards for creative and strategic antitrust work

Legal publisher Global Competition Review (GCR) has presented Allen & Overy with two awards for “Behavioural Matter of the Year - Europe” and “Merger Control Matter of the Year - Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa”. The results were announced at a prestigious ceremony in Washington, D.C on 14 April. Presented annually by GCR, the awards are intended to recognise “creative, strategic and innovative competition work” on the most significant competition matters over the past 12 months. The winners are selected from a broad range of antitrust merger, litigation and investigation cases and highlight the law firms, lawyers, economists and enforcers that excelled in 2014. More than 3,000 votes were cast this year by antitrust professionals around the globe.

The awards for Allen & Overy were:

  • Behavioural Matter of the Year (Europe) - Samsung Electronics SEP settlement (Michel Struys, Charles Pommiès, Francesca Miotto and Jean-François Willems)
  • Merger Control Matter of the Year (Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa) - Merck KGaA/AZ Electronic Materials (Ellen Braun, François Renard, Tim Schaper, David Ernst and Desma Polydorou)

In the merger control category, Allen & Overy was also shortlisted for KPN, E-Plus/ Telefónica Deutschland, which many regard as an important precedent for further consolidation in the European mobile telecommunication sector. An A&O antitrust team led by Kees Schillemans (Amsterdam), Tjarda van der Vijver and Kai Althaus advised on this transaction.

This success follows Allen & Overy being named as one of the world’s best antitrust and competition teams in the 2015 “GCR 100” ranking.
