Allen & Overy congratulates former partner Heath Tarbert on the announcement made yesterday that he has been confirmed as Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission ("CFTC").

Dr. Tarbert joined A&O as partner in 2014 where he helped lead the firm's U.S. bank regulatory group. Following his impressive track record working for financial institutions around the world, Dr. Tarbert was tapped in 2017 by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to serve as Assistant Secretary for International Markets, where he worked to advance U.S. interests in multilateral organisations on financial stability and regulatory issues.

Dr. Tarbert is a member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the international body established to monitor global markets, and serves on its steering committee and all three of its Standing Committees. He is also Co-Chair of the U.S.-EU Financial Regulatory Forum and U.S.-UK Financial Regulatory Working Group, both of which focus on enhancing financial regulatory cooperation with key counterparts and advancing U.S. economic interests.

In addition to his government service, Dr. Tarbert has been the Chairman of the American Bar Association Subcommittee on Systemically Important Financial Institutions, Legal Adviser to the Systemic Risk Council, Senior Fellow at the Harvard Law School Program on International Financial Systems, Deputy Director of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, and a member of The Bretton Woods Committee. Dr. Tarbert has also served on the Board of Advisors for the Review of Securities and Commodities Regulation.
