Black History Month 2022 – See it, Be it

Celebrating the legal role models paving the way for the next generation of Black lawyers.

As part of our Black History Month celebrations we highlighted Black talent in senior positions across the legal industry. We brought together leading private practice lawyers, in-house counsel and barristers of Black heritage for a series of video interviews - because we know that you have to see it, to know you can be it.

Special thanks to our interviewees:

  • A&O partners MaameYaa Kwafo-Akoto, Jessica Kerslake and Guled Yusuf
  • Felicia Hanson Ofori-Quaah, General Counsel at Mangata Networks
  • Lara Oyesanya, Group General Counsel, Company Secretary and C-suite Executive at Zepz
  • Oba Nsugbe KC, SAN, Head of Chambers at Pump Court Chambers
  • Sharon Blackman OBE, Managing Director & General Counsel at Citi
  • Chiz Nwokonkor, Executive Director, Head of Global Financial Crimes Legal Advisory (EMEA) at Morgan Stanley
  • Martin Forde KC at 1 Crown Office Row
  • Solomon Wifa, Partner - Funds and Asset Management at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP

A&O Associate Karen Boadu shared why this initiative aimed at inspiring future generations is so important:

I feel incredibly privileged to be part of this initiative which has helped to highlight the visibility of the UK’s top Black lawyers, their talents and their achievements within the industry. Giving students the opportunity to interview the lawyers about their career path and experiences has enabled us to raise the aspirations of the next generation and that’s something I think we can all be proud of.
