Allen and Overy achieves top ranking for work with young people

08 October 2019

LONDON: Allen & Overy has achieved a top ranking for their work with young people and has been ranked 32 overall in the Social Mobility Employer Index.

The Index is a bench-marking initiative that ranks employers on the actions they are taking to ensure they are open to accessing and progressing talent from all backgrounds and showcases progress towards improving social mobility.

The global law firm was commended for working with outreach schools and offering a high proportion of students eligible for free school meals work experience.

One particular area of success for the firm was the launch of their new programme 'A&O Accelerate'. The programme is specifically designed for students from low socio-economic backgrounds who are interested in a legal career and allows them to gain practical work experience in the legal sector. One of the benefits of the programme is that it helps to identify and engage future lawyers and offers a route in to the legal sector for lower socio-economic students.

There was also praise for Allen & Overy in a number of other areas, including progression, advocacy and recruitment and selection. The firm has been working with The Bridge Group, a group that promotes social equality, to look at progression and has also introduced a new recruitment framework - The Lawyer of the Future - an assessment that has allowed Allen & Overy to focus more on the potential of candidates.

Commenting on the ranking, Mark Mansell, partner and chair of the social mobility working group, said: "This ranking is recognition of the steps we are taking to ensure that students from all backgrounds are given access to careers in the legal sector.

While there is still work to do, initiatives like A&O Accelerate, Lawyer of the Future and our flagship social mobility programme Smart Start, have given us the opportunity to try and change the corporate environment to make it more inclusive.
