Allen & Overy’s dispute resolution team has been recognised by the Australian Disputes Centre as Australia’s leading alternative dispute resolution practice of 2018, winning Practice Group of the Year and two individual awards at the 2018 Australian Alternative Dispute Resolution Awards at Parliament House in Sydney.

Allen & Overy Perth-based partner Mark van Brakel won Arbitration Practitioner of the Year, and Sydney-based senior associate Robert Tang was a joint winner of the Young ADR Practitioner of the Year Award.

The firm’s Practice Group of the Year Award win stemmed from Allen & Overy’s work on a number of high-profile matters including in the energy and resources space and a significant consumer class action. The award recognised the dispute resolution team’s ability to secure negotiated settlements for top-tier clients in challenging and unusual circumstances, and highlighted Allen & Overy’s unparalleled cross-jurisdictional capability in the Asia-Pacific Region. The Australian practice has worked closely alongside the firm’s Singapore and Hong Kong teams on several significant cross-border arbitration matters

John Samaha, Allen & Overy’s head of litigation in Australia and Asia-Pacific, commented: “We are delighted that Allen & Overy’s Australian dispute resolution practice has been recognised by the Australian Disputes Centre as the Practice Group of the Year. I want to acknowledge and thank the Singapore and Hong Kong teams, with whom the Australian team works closely to provide our clients with an unparalleled dispute resolution offering, combining international expertise and local insight.”

John added: “I would like to congratulate Mark van Brakel for winning Arbitration Practitioner of the Year and Robert Tang who was a joint winner of the Young ADR Practitioner of the Year Award. For two lawyers from one practice to have taken home both awards is outstanding. Mark and Robert’s work has been fundamental to the success of the practice over the past year, driven by their mutual dedication to uncovering the real issues at the heart of disputes and developing fitting solutions for our clients.”

One of Australia’s most highly regarded dispute resolution partners, Mark van Brakel was the first litigation partner in Allen & Overy’s Perth offices and helped to grow the reputation of the practice in relation to significant mining and energy disputes. The Arbitration Practitioner of the Year Award highlighted Mark’s detailed knowledge of the international arbitration landscape and his ability to pass on a full understanding of complex ADR procedures to clients, as well as his consistent advocacy for flexible and tailored dispute resolution solutions, rather than a traditional approach with which clients are often familiar.

Robert Tang, joint winner of the Young ADR Practitioner of the Year Award, was recognised for his work on complex and significant commercial arbitrations on large-scale oil, gas and mining matters. Robert’s creative approach to identifying the real issues in dispute and developing alternative dispute resolution processes was emphasised at the Awards, alongside his dedication to developing tailored and cost-effective solutions.

The Australian ADR Awards are hosted by the Australian Disputes Centre, are open to Australian lawyers and Australia-based dispute resolution teams and measure excellence in both domestic and international alternative dispute resolution.
