ICC opens representative office in the ADGM
The ICC will open a representative office in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (the ADGM) in the first quarter of 2018, together with a new arbitration centre.
The ADGM is a financial free zone in Abu Dhabi, similar to the DIFC in Dubai. This will be the ICC’s third representative office, and the first in the Middle East. Care should be taken when drafting arbitration agreements seated in the ADGM, for example, by identifying the seat of arbitration separately and as distinct from the rules governing the arbitral procedure (for example, the ICC Rules).
Staff will accept the registration of ICC cases, which will then be administered by the ICC’s existing case management teams. The office will also be able to assist with general queries about the ICC. The move demonstrates confidence in the UAE as an arbitration hub, and is likely to raise the ADGM’s profile as a destination for arbitration in the Middle East.
