Our U.S. offices

In November of 1985, Allen & Overy opened up its New York office and over the past quarter century, has grown to be the principal hub of Allen & Overy's Global U.S. practice.

The office is situated in the heart of midtown Manhattan, which offers easy access to some of the world’s most recognizable destinations. The neighborhood also boasts top-flight restaurants and bars, from Michelin starred restaurants to tasty Halal vendors.

In June 2011, Allen & Overy opened its Washington, D.C. office, and with the addition of three new partners, the firm bolstered its leading U.S. Regulatory practice.

Our Washington, D.C. office is located near the Metro Center station in the nation’s capitol, just a few blocks north of the heart of Pennsylvania Avenue, the historic street that is home to many of Washington DC’s parades and festivals.

Both of our US offices provide a broad range of sophisticated legal services, while being fully integrated within the Allen & Overy global network.

What we offer

Entry level

For our associates to reach their potential, the scope of development we offer them is critical.

At A&O, we work closely with you to develop your skills early in your career through a variety of training programs and resources. As an entry level associate, you and your entire U.S. first year class will usually start with a week of training in New York before traveling to your respective office. Your first week of orientation will include the following programs:

  • Multi-day intensive course specifically for new associates
  • Lectures on legal developments by partners and associates
  • Department-specific training sessions
  • Special courses on topics such as the art of communication, legal writing, risk management, law firm economics and more!

Our U.S. offices have a rotation system in place for our entry level associates. If you join without a permanent practice group placement, you’ll rotate through two departments for six months each during your first 12 months at the firm. You can opt out of the second rotation if you decide to make the department of your first rotation your permanent choice and the department agrees to accept that. For incoming classes, efforts will be made to enable associates to practice in their preferred group during the rotation process.

Summer associates

When starting a career in law, being treated as a full-time associate makes a difference.

Our summer associate program is a great way to experience our cutting-edge work and collaborative culture, and to work on top-quality transactions in various areas.

Summer associates may join the practice at any of our four main U.S. practice offices: New York, Washington, D.C., London or Hong Kong. As part of the program, you’ll gain real and valuable experience from day one, working alongside associates and partners. You’ll also be offered formal training programs that will provide broad exposure to our practice areas and supplement your day-to-day work. Below are a few examples of the programs offered throughout the summer:

  • Legal writing workshop
  • Working with in-house Counsel panel
  • Practice area presentations
  • Women in law discussion

Summer associates are not assigned to a particular practice area, so you’ll be able to work in all of the U.S. practice areas available in your office. We have a work allocation committee made up of multiple associates from various practice areas such as Corporate, Litigation and Project Finance and Restructuring who oversee work assignments.

You’ll meet with them regularly to discuss your projects and ensure you’re progressing through a wide variety of work. We’ll provide informal feedback throughout the summer and formal feedback in both a mid-summer and exit review.

But it’s not all work and no play. There’s plenty of time to socialize with other summer associates, lawyers and partners – broadening your knowledge of the firm, building your network and exposing you to the culture of the city where you work.

Learning and development

One of the things our associates value most about being at Allen & Overy is the world-class training they receive. Throughout the year, we hold regular seminars for our attorneys to further develop their knowledge and skills, and we send our attorneys to external, practice area-specific programs as well.

In addition to learning practical skills such as commercial and strategic awareness, effective communication and efficient time management, you’ll participate in global training programs geared toward developing your business acumen at each step of your career.

We’re committed to career progression, and have established programs to encourage your advancement. We recently began a business skills training program for female attorneys called "Women Making Their Mark".

We’ve also developed "Owning Your Career", a career management program for mid-level associates. As you move through your associate career, you’ll have the opportunity to review your aspirations, explore your values, motivations and skills, and devise a plan to achieve your goals and take responsibility for your own career development and success.

Benefits

We’ll equip you for the future, both yours and ours, whatever it may bring. We believe that enjoyment and satisfaction at work go hand in hand. That’s why we’re proud to offer a competitive and innovative employment package that’s committed to the health, success and well-being of all of our people.

We offer comprehensive medical insurance, life insurance and disability benefits. We sponsor a group 401(k) retirement plan, as well as an educational savings plan for your children or beneficiaries. We also host annual on-site wellness programs and have a comprehensive work/life assistance program available to all employees.
