Trainee Solicitor - Singapore

A&O needs no introduction as one of the world’s most elite global law firms. I arrived at A&O through the Summer Vacation Scheme where I discovered that the firm is the right fit for me in terms of its culture, profile, international presence and top-notch training. As I was keen to practise in Asia, I applied to be based in the Singapore office.

The firm values individuality and diversity of backgrounds.  I have always felt respected and appreciated for my abilities despite being the most inexperienced member of the team. For example, during my first seat in the International Capital Markets department, the team members, knowing that I grew up in a multilingual environment in Asia, had given me many invaluable opportunities to use my language skills whenever the business need arose.

Due to the leaner structure in the Singapore office compared to London, I have been given significant responsibility at an early stage of my career with appropriate guidance from the senior members of the team. Towards the second half of my second seat, I was given the opportunity to manage the ancillary work streams of one of the biggest Banking deals in the APAC region, which involved dealing with external clients and counsels in various jurisdictions (who are top-tier in their respective industries).

It is truly encouraging to know that my involvement, no matter how big or small, can directly add value to our deal team and our clients. Although it was intimidating in the beginning with a lot of hard work in the between (as with any top law firm), the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when the deals finally closed made up for the late nights and early mornings.

The people at A&O are not just excellent lawyers, but also friends and mentors who genuinely care about the people that they work with. There is always a sense of collegiality within the firm – not only do I enjoy working with the people here; I also love our candid chats on random topics in life (such as our favourite Netflix series).

The wellbeing of A&O employees is not just a tagline. Throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic period, A&O Singapore has gone the extra mile to make sure that everyone is well supported and connected. From setting up professional workstations at home to the occasional surprise cupcake delivery during lockdown; from free lunches provided at the office to social events such as virtual wine and cheese tasting and National Day Party) - the perks at A&O are almost as good as its training!

Overall, I am incredibly proud to be a part of a firm that actively promotes inclusiveness and value its people. I would recommend anyone thinking of pursuing an international legal career to start their journey with A&O.
