Seize the opportunity to build your future by doing empowering work on a global scale.
At Allen & Overy, we’re determined to be at the forefront of new developments within the legal industry, setting the pace and leading the way. Join us if you want to make an impact and influence the future of law.
What we offer
At Allen & Overy, we believe that how you work is just as important as what you achieve.
Naturally, we are looking for first-class legal expertise and sharp, incisive thinking – but we are also looking for people who see things differently. Ours is an organisation that thrives on the eclectic mix of personalities, backgrounds and opinions our people bring with them. It makes for an exciting and stimulating place to work and an innovative, original and highly effective offering for our clients.
To sustain its growth, Allen & Overy Belgium offers traineeships in a dynamic and challenging work environment and the opportunity to be a part of a leading international legal practice. During your traineeship, the emphasis will be on developing your technical knowledge and professional skills under the guidance of senior lawyers.
Each year we host around 15 law students for a one month summer internship during the months of July and August in our offices in Brussels and Antwerp. We not only provide you with a variety of assignments to learn from, we also give you a flavour of life at the office, organise a proper induction and give you opportunities to network while you are here.
We are known as a legal practice that combines career possibilities with a very pleasant working environment. We want to enjoy our work and organise different social activities including the daily 'cookie time', a practice-group day and a yearly 'revue' with a dinner and party.
We also have a health and wellbeing team consisting of lawyers and support staff that organise a full programme of activities to encourage healthier living and general wellbeing. Some of the activities organised by the team include an annual ski weekend, the Legal Run (20K around Brussels) and a carting evening.
The Assistance Programme provides free access to a range of specialist support and information services, including telephone and face-to-face counselling.
Guaranteed income insurance
In the event of complete incapacity (caused by illness, accident, childbirth, etc) Allen & Overy will continue to pay part of your fees throughout the first three months of incapacity.
Professional liability insurance
The respective bars have concluded a group professional liability policy whereby part of your bar contribution acts as an insurance premium. Above the amount covered by the bar, for Allen & Overy matters, you are also insured through the Allen & Overy policy which provides worldwide cover.
Professional travel insurance
All trainees are automatically covered for business journeys while travelling overseas. Benefits are payable for medical and emergency travel expenses; loss of baggage; loss of money or traveller's cheques; cancellation, curtailment and change of itinerary; travel delay; passport indemnity; personal liability and legal expenses.
Learning and development
We want to provide everyone, from graduates and junior lawyers, through to Senior Associate level practitioners and partners, with constant learning opportunities. Qualifying as a lawyer is an important milestone, but your growth and development at A&O will continue far beyond that. A career with us provides a platform to open doors and brings opportunities you wouldn’t find anywhere else.
The A&O Business School will provide you with the commercial and personal skills that you need to navigate through an ever-changing business landscape, while helping you build the skills you need for your career - whether that is at A&O or elsewhere.
The Business School offers a variety of excellent courses relevant to your career stage, with an emphasis on practical skills and business insight to complement advanced legal knowledge. The school also offers a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from partners and gain valuable insights from the world of business. From cutting-edge content to world-class coaches, our partners work on the design of the courses and act as faculty members to share their experience and expertise.
Throughout your journey with us, we'll equip you for today and tomorrow – providing you with opportunities to enhance your skills and build your confidence. At A&O, you'll get the challenge and support required for a successful career at the highest level.
Keep your CV to no more than two pages with simple design and readable font style and size.
Ensure your application is free from spelling and grammatical errors – attention to detail is a fundamental skill for a lawyer. When it comes to interviews, getting feedback on how you come across in an interview scenario from someone you don’t know can be really helpful before the event.
Know your goals
Creating an application that stands out from the crowd can be challenging. Make sure you know what’s required by familiarising yourself with what skills we look for and prepare some examples to demonstrate your experience of each.
Highlight your work experience
If you have completed legal or non-legal, commercial or any other kind of work experience, think about what you have learned and observed. For example, you may have made a recommendation for improving a process or handled a difficult customer. Using specific examples shows you have learned from your experience.
Research the firm
We recognise that you’ll be applying to a number of law firms but it’s your individual approach and attention to our firm that will help set you apart. It’s worth taking the time to focus on each individual application – it may take longer but the effort will be worth it if you secure an interview.
I don’t have my most recent transcript, can I still apply?
Can I post/email/fax my application?
What type of candidates do you look for?
Here there is no “typical” candidate. We expect our people to challenge each other, and the status quo. So you’ll need to be full of energy and ready for anything. You’ll also have:
- A Belgian Master in Law. Only our EU and Competition practice accepts candidates with a Master in Law obtained in a country within the European Union other than Belgium.
- Fluency in Dutch or French, with an excellent command of the other language and English.
- Excellent communication skills, independence and team spirit.
