Senior In-House Lawyer
I joined A&O’s In-House Legal team as a junior lawyer in 2018 and was promoted to senior lawyer in 2020 having previously spent many years practising as a criminal defence, financial crime and regulatory specialist both in a local Belfast firm and at one of the “big 4” accountancy firms. I was unsure if my experience would strictly match the profile required to work in-house at a magic circle law firm but I was delighted to find a team filled with all kinds of backgrounds and experiences which allows people to utilise and build on their talents and interests.
“Global presence” is a term often used to describe teams with a multi-jurisdiction offering but it is truly a part of every day life at A&O and contributes to making this a uniquely interesting team to work in. The In-House Legal team, solely based in Belfast, is a central cog in the structure of the firm and is utilised on a daily basis by lawyers and business teams from across the globe.
Given the role of the team we are involved in some of the most interesting and complex legal issues in the industry, providing In-House legal advice not only to our lawyers and business teams but also across the firm’s management. Working alongside global industry experts to solve issues and provide advice not only keeps my work interesting, it has made me a better lawyer.
We have an embedded culture of personal development, underpinned by providing a high level of autonomy in our work coupled with readily available support and assistance. I have personally benefited from this when I was promoted and am proud to have supported a number of our team through their own promotions.
I benefit massively from the flexibility the firm provides in our working patterns which allows me to juggle my career alongside home life with two young children. I would encourage anyone interesting in working in a cutting edge and high performance team, regardless of their background and experience, to consider a role in our In-House Legal team.
