Learning and development

You will benefit from a comprehensive training programme designed to complement your law degree. In addition to covering the commercial legal skills, LPs will spend time at the beginning of their employment in our London office. Our LPs undertake an intensive Business Law & Practice programme designed and delivered in Belfast by the University of Law, and receive skills-based training from A&O partners and senior lawyers. The training covers legal process and supervisory skills, as well as personal development.

You can attend internal legal training courses such as the firm’s Universities of Banking, Corporate, Litigation and ICM, which are available to associates worldwide. These courses offer senior LPs the opportunity to fully understand the legal and commercial rationale behind the work they do on a daily basis. It also provides opportunities to work with colleagues from across the network.

Secondments for LPs may also arise across various offices in the A&O network or client sites. Lawyers from Belfast have been seconded to work within the General Lending and Leveraged Finance team in New York, multi-jurisdictional investment grade and real estate financings with the banking team in London and assisting on facets of litigation matters in Dubai.

Working environment

The Belfast office is an exciting, fast paced and challenging workplace in which you will have the opportunity to strengthen your skills and work on complex finance and business law matters across a wide range of practices and jurisdictions and in an open-plan and supportive environment.

At Allen & Overy Belfast, it is not all work, no play. Socially, the Belfast office hosts monthly drinks, quiz nights and other events. In recent years, the ADL team has also entered teams in the local tag rugby spring and summer leagues and the Belfast marathon. Last year’s team ran in aid of local charity Lagan Search and Rescue.

That’s why we’re proud to offer a competitive and innovative employment package that’s committed to the health, success and well-being of all of our people.

Our other benefits include gym membership with a corporate discount, cycle to work scheme and bike loan. Not to mention, 23 days holiday, and 10 public holidays.

Corporate social responsibility

A&O offers many opportunities to get involved in pro bono work and corporate social responsibility activities.

One of our LPs won a firm-wide competition to film a visit to Tanzania as part of our global charity partnership, through our Corporate Responsibility Committee. He accompanied partners, project managers and trainees, to get a sense of how the health and education focused projects were progressing 18 months into our partnership.

In 2017, members of the ADL team took part in a charity football tournament in Amsterdam, representing Belfast against teams from our European offices, to raise money for War Child, our former global charity partner.

Last year, two of our LPs joined A&O colleagues from across the network to trek in Amman, Jordan in the support of War Child. They walked over 70 km across mountainous landscape and deserts to raise money for Syrian children and their parents in the refugee camp in Jordan.
