Kaya Carville
In-House Lawyer
I joined In-House Legal as a paralegal in March 2018, having 18 months experience with a commercial firm in the disputes department and no previous in-house experience. I instantly knew this was a good career move.
There is an open and collaborative work environment within the team, where everyone is treated as an equal. You are encouraged to take ownership of your own workload, which at a junior level is instrumental in your development. There are support mechanisms in place to ensure you always have someone to discuss work with when needed.
There are clear paths for career progression within the team. After a few months with A&O, I was given the opportunity to work towards qualifying as a lawyer. Throughout my qualification I felt the team took a true interest in my development and were extremely supportive. I was promoted to in-house lawyer in March 2021. Since my promotion, I have been supported and encouraged to take on more responsibilities, including taking a leading role on a project and being in charge of the training of the paralegal team.
Working in-house you regularly have opportunities to work with different offices and support A&O’s global presence. I have worked on multiple global projects, which involved collaborating with all offices across the A&O network, and am currently working on two office specific projects with Germany and Australia.
Overall, the work is varied and the right level of challenging, which ensures that no two days are the same and I am continually learning and gaining exposure to different areas of law. You are encouraged to speak up about your interests and effort is made to allow you to gain experience in these areas where possible.
A&O also has strong focus on pro bono activities and mental wellbeing. These elements are important to me within any career and In-House Legal encourages you to get involved where you can. For example, I am currently volunteering with the ‘Time to Read’ program, supporting primary school children with their reading skills, and I have completed various mental health focused training courses to enable me to promote mental wellbeing in the office.
I am proud to work with In-House Legal and am excited continue to develop my career with A&O.
