Gender and ethnicity pay gap reporting - UK

This is A&O’s third UK Pay Gap Report. Having full transparency about our actions, challenges and progress is central to achieving a balanced and diverse workforce, so we have expanded what is covered in our report to include more information on ethnicity and to provide high level figures on sexual orientation for the first time. 

The pay gaps calculated in these reports are the difference between: men and women; BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and non-BAME; or LGBT+ and non-LGBT+. They are not a comparison of how much we pay people in the same or similar roles and are therefore different from equal pay.

This year’s report shows that in most cases our pay gaps are moving in the right direction, but we know that year-on-year changes will be fairly small. Significantly reducing pay gaps will take time because they are predominantly a reflection of the make-up of our workforce – with higher numbers of women in business support roles and a larger proportion of men in the most senior positions within the firm.

We talk more in this year’s report about the actions we are taking to address specific diversity objectives and to achieve the culture of inclusion that supports people’s progression to senior positions – which is critical in closing pay gaps.

We are making progress against our objectives and working hard to ensure we understand the challenges and barriers to progression that certain groups can face, so we can be confident our plans will produce the results we want.
