Alex advises on technology, IP and data focused commercial arrangements.

This includes IP and data rich transactions, such as collaborations, licenses, service agreements, and technology development agreements, as well as strategic advisory matters. Alex also advises on the technology, IP and data aspects of M&A transactions and joint ventures. Alex works across all sectors, with a particular focus on technology and life sciences.

Alex is recognised as a leading expert in the legal issues arising from AI, having advised on AI related matters for many years. He is a specialist in the IP and data issues arising from AI, as well as the range of AI related contracts across the ‘buy / build / collaborate’ spectrum. He is currently bringing this expertise to a large number of clients across advisory, contracting and compliance matters. In particular, Alex is providing cutting edge advice on novel contractual protections to mitigate the range of IP, data and compliance risks raised by generative AI. Alex also advises on AI-specific risks in M&A transactions and private capital investments.

Representative matters

Core member of A&O Shearman’s AI Working Group, a syndicate of 70+ global businesses on which A&O Shearman is advising on the safe deployment of generative AI across US, EU and UK laws. Alex leads the IP and contracting aspects of this advice.

A global pharmaceutical company on various contracts for building, using and licensing generative AI systems. Alex advised on novel contract terms for mitigating generative AI-specific risks across a range of use cases.

Funds raised by Apax Partners on the AI-specific, IP and technology aspects of their £700m acquisition of a data-rich consumer trends forecasting business. Alex led a strategic, forward-looking assessment of potential risks arising from the use of the target’s data to build generative AI models.

A global pharmaceutical company on the IP, technology and separation aspects of its $550m carve-out and divestment of its global consumer healthcare business.

Pro bono
