After the Earthquake of the Century: M&A in Japan

11 July 2011

In times of human tragedy, day-to day business affairs should not be discussed.

This is one of the reasons why the effects of the historic earthquke on 11 March 2011 are only now slowly coming to light; namely, how the earthquake has restricted the production capacity of Japanese companies, fractured traditional business relations and opened up opportunities for new foreign suppliers to enter the market.

Some discussion has also since emerged about what effects the tragedy is having on the M&A activities of Japanese companies.

The authors Hartmut Krause and Nobuo Nakata have long-standing experience in cross-border M&A transactions and are responsible for the German-Japanese desk at Allen & Overy LLP.
