  Frederic Chevallier

Frédéric deals with Intellectual Property matters and in particular, patent litigation. Before joining Allen & Overy, Frédéric worked at Herbert Smith in Paris in their Intellectual Property department.

Frédéric’s practice focuses on representation of leading pharmaceutical innovators and high-tech companies in cross-border patent litigation involving up to eleven different jurisdictions. He has worked on cases of first impression, including matters which lead to the CJEU’s first decision addressing the subject matter and effects of a Supplementary Protection Certificate, and confirming the first granted decision in France (even Europe-wide) on this issue. In addition, Frédéric is involved in an on-going high-profile, multi-jurisdictional patent dispute involving Standard Essential Patents in the telecommunications field. In addition to his cross-border experience, Frédéric has also acquired a wealth of experience in French aspects of civil procedure, including the planning and execution of infringement seizures (saisie-contrefaçon), obtaining preliminary injunctions and preparation and handling of trial hearings.

Frédéric brings a unique perspective to his practice as a result of his secondment to a major pharmaceutical innovator client where he was imbedded in the in-house legal department, directly assisting the General Council for France on various intellectual property matters.

During his LL.M. studies, Frédéric focused on the interplay of EC competition law and intellectual property and in particular, the technology transfer agreements block exemptions EC Regulation. As part of his legal training, Frédéric spent six months working in the legal department at Saatchi & Saatchi (Publicis) in New York where he was part of the IP compliance team, working on a variety of issues including license compliance and rights of publicity.

Frédéric is active in the legal community and regularly provides legal trainings and seminars internally, as well as programs customised to clients’ request and special needs.

Prior to joining Allen & Overy, Frédéric has in-depth experience representing the leading search engine and provider of online services, in a variety of contentious Intellectual Property matters, within France and before the CJEU. Specifically, Frédéric handled cutting edge legal issues involving sponsored advertising online, video hosting, book digitization and image referencing.
