Dr Daniel Busse

Dr Daniel Busse, LL.M. (Columbia University) heads Allen & Overy's German Arbitration practice. He is one of Germany’s top arbitration lawyers and is listed in the top band of all relevant directories, including Chambers (Global and Europe, where the top band for arbitration counsel in Germany consists of only three practitioners). Other guides and directories in which he is equally prominently listed include Legal 500, JUVE, Best Lawyers and Global Arbitration Review's "The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration". Who’s Who Legal 2017 listed him as a leading practitioner in "Thought Leaders - Arbitration 2017".

Daniel Busse deals exclusively with arbitration and has experience in conducting cases subject to many different systems of law and under many major institutional rules, in particular under the arbitration rules of the DIS and ICC, but also, e.g., ICSID, LCIA, SIAC and SAA. His work covers all stages of the arbitration process, from initial advice to clients and settlement negotiations up to advocacy during hearings and enforcement (or opposing enforcement) of an award. Daniel Busse predominantly represents clients in corporate (especially "post-M&A disputes"), energy, infrastructure projects and general commercial matters. He also frequently acts as an arbitrator; he has done so in more than 50 cases, ten of which as chairman of the tribunal or sole arbitrator. Daniel Busse also has an in-depth knowledge of private international law issues and frequently acts in cases under foreign substantive and procedural law.

For about ten years, Daniel Busse served as a lecturer or honorary professor in arbitration law at the University of Gießen. He regularly speaks at arbitration conferences and publishes in various leading German and English legal journals. He is the founder of the Hamburg branch of DIS 40 as well as a co-founder of the Hamburg Arbitration Circle. He has served on the (three-member) DIS Appointing Committee and the Drafting Committee in charge of revising the DIS Arbitration Rules. Daniel Busse also serves on the boards and/or task forces of international arbitration groups and institutions, such as the ICC, IBA, KLRCA and ARIAS Europe. In addition, he is a member of the panel of arbitrators for the German Court of Arbitration for Sport (Deutsches Sportschiedsgericht) and Fellow of Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.
