Dr Daniel Busse

Dr Daniel Busse, LL.M. (Columbia University) heads Allen & Overy's German Dispute Resolution practice. He deals exclusively with arbitration (mostly commercial, but increasingly also investment arbitration) and has experience in conducting cases under various sets of arbitration rules and subject to many different systems of law. He predominantly represents clients in corporate, energy, projects, finance, reinsurance and general commercial matters. Daniel Busse also frequently acts as an arbitrator, so far in more than 50 cases, ten of which as chairman of the tribunal or sole arbitrator.

Daniel Busse has an in-depth knowledge of private international law issues and frequently acts in cases under foreign substantive and procedural law. His work covers all stages of the arbitration process, from the initial advice and settlement negotiations up until the enforcement (or the resisting of enforcement) of an award. He is experienced in conducting international arbitration proceedings under all major institutional rules, in particular under the arbitration rules of DIS and ICC, but also, e.g. ICSID, SIAC and SAA. He frequently acts in cases involving national and international commercial law with a major focus on corporate (especially "post M&A") and energy-related matters.

Daniel Busse is recommended as a leading expert on international arbitration in all major guides and directories, including Chambers, Legal 500, JUVE, Best Lawyers and Global Arbitration Review's "The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration". In its newest edition, Who's Who Legal 2015 describes him as "extremely strong" and praises his "incredibly effective representation of clients in arbitrations". In addition, Chambers sees him as one of the top 10 arbitration counsel and a "most in demand arbitrator". Daniel Busse is also named as a "leading name in arbitration" in the JUVE Handbook.

For about ten years, Daniel Busse served as a lecturer and honorary professor in arbitration law at the University of Gießen. He regularly speaks at arbitration conferences and publishes in various leading German and English legal journals. He is the founder of the Hamburg group of DIS 40 as well as a co-founder of the Hamburg Arbitration Circle. Daniel Busse also serves on boards and task forces of international arbitration groups and institutions, such as ICC, IBA, KLRCA and ARIAS Europe. In addition he is a current member of the German sports arbitration panel (Deutsches Sportschiedsgericht).
