Brechje's practice covers a wide range of commercial and financial dispute resolution. She specialises in banking, finance and securities litigation, class actions, collective settlements, restructuring and insolvency matters and directors' liability. Brechje represents various financial institutions in consumer class actions involving financial products and negotiated the first collective settlement on unit linked life insurance policies. She regularly advises and publishes on collective settlements under the 2005 Act on the Collective Settlement of Mass Damages. Her clients include corporates and financial institutions and she publishes and lectures frequently. Brechje is head of the Allen & Overy Amsterdam Financial Regulatory Team and a member of the Allen & Overy Global Class Action Team.
Brechje joined Loeff Claeys Verbeke, the firm that merged into Allen & Overy in 2000, in 1996. Prior to specialising in dispute resolution, she worked in the Amsterdam mergers & acquisitions practice.
The 2011 edition of Chambers Global and Europe rank Brechje a 'Up and coming individual, stating " Brechje van der Velden shows strong drive, talent and creativity. A peer dubbed her "a new partner with great promise". In the 2011 edition of Chambers Europe on Insurance Brechje ranks as key individual: Clients pick her out for her "in-depth knowledge of insurance matters, strong communication skills and understanding of clients' needs and aims".
