Renowned data protection specialist joins A&O as partner

29 August 2019

FRANKFURT – Renowned data protection specialist Dr Ulrich Baumgartner is to join the Munich office of Allen & Overy.

He will be a partner within the firm and head up the German data protection team, with a particular focus on the data protection, outsourcing and cloud computing.

His role will see him work closely in the field of technology with the existing IP/ Tech team led by partners Dr Jens Matthes and Dr Jan Ebersohl. Ulrich will join the firm from Osborne Clarke, where he has been a partner since 2009. His precise starting date is yet to be determined.

"Ulrich Baumgartner is a highly qualified and successful data protection lawyer who enjoys an excellent reputation in the market," said Thomas Ubber, senior partner of Allen & Overy Germany.

"Client demand for advice in the field of data and data protection has grown strongly in the wake of various new laws and increased digitalisation and use of technology. For this reason, high-level legal expertise and enhanced consulting resources in the field of technology, data and cloud services are essential and expanding our data protection practice is a strategically important step. With Ulrich, we now have the necessary enhancement at partner level and at the same time further develop our global consulting practice on cloud-based business models."

In addition to the core team in Munich and Düsseldorf, Allen & Overy’s expanded German data protection team comprises lawyers from across practice groups and provides strategic advice on using data in a legally compliant manner as well as on issues that interface with other fields, such as employment law, corporate/M&A, banking regulatory, IT/digitalisation and litigation/investigations.

The firm's global data protection group covers the fields of TMT, data & tech and cyber security, comprising around 160 lawyers and is active across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and the USA.

For more than 16 years Dr Ulrich Baumgartner has focused on German and European data protection law as well as cloud and IT law. Just a few weeks ago, the Handelsblatt Research Institute and WirtschaftsWoche ranked him among the most renowned data protection lawyers in Germany, according to a survey of 830 lawyers in over 100 law firms. The clients he advises are globally renowned companies from various industries in Europe and overseas. Due to several long-term secondments in the legal departments of various clients he also understands the in-house perspective.

Ulrich regularly gives lectures at the C.H.Beck Academy as well as at other meetings and conferences. He is the author of the first comprehensive specialist book on legal issues relating to mobile apps and co-author of various standard commentaries on data protection law. As co-chair he leads the Munich KnowledgeNet of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and conducts CIPP/E certification trainings on behalf of the IAPP.
