Allen & Overy bolsters China practice with the appointment of David Lam as counsel and Head of China Desk (Australia)

01 August 2019

Allen & Overy has appointed David Lam as counsel and Head of Allen & Overy’s China Desk (Australia) based in Sydney.

David is a recognised market leader in the financing of cross-border transactions involving Chinese sponsors and lenders across the Asia Pacific region. He has worked extensively on projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and has been deeply involved in BRI-related Chinese government and industry initiatives. He has a wealth of experience working with banks, financiers, conglomerates and corporate borrowers across a broad range of transactions.

As Head of Allen & Overy’s China Desk in Australia, David will drive the firm’s China strategy in the Australian market and is part of Allen & Overy’s expanded team of bilingual lawyers serving Chinese clients. David will also support Australian and international clients working with Chinese counterparties as well as Chinese clients exploring investments in the Australian market and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region.

Vicki Liu, Regional Head of Allen & Overy’s Asia Pacific Banking practice commented: “Our Australian China Desk is an integral component of Allen & Overy’s advisory footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. David’s in-depth experience and understanding of the interplay between Chinese and other markets means he is well-placed to offer advice across a wide range of transactions in Australia and across the region, combining sophisticated cross-jurisdictional expertise and commercial judgement”.

Adam Stapledon, Head of Allen & Overy’s Banking and Projects practice in Australia added: “Chinese investment continues to play a significant role in shaping the market in Australia and in the region more generally. Our market leading combination of top tier local and international expertise is an excellent fit for a lawyer with David’s experience and client relationships.  We look forward to working with David in continuing to deliver that expertise to our clients.”

Having worked in Hong Kong, London, Beijing and Shanghai, David is a holder of legal qualification certificate of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), alongside his English and Hong Kong qualifications, which is a rare combination in the APAC legal industry.
