Allen & Overy advises CVC on the financing of its investment in Spain's Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio

20 May 2019

Allen & Overy has advised CVC Capital Partners (CVC), a world leader in private equity, on its senior facilities used to fund its investment in, and partnership with, Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio (UAX), one of the principal private education institutions in Spain and the oldest in its field.  The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.

On closing, CVC Fund VII will become an indirect shareholder of UAX. Established in 1994, UAX offers a wide array of higher education options across undergraduate, post-graduate and masters programmes. CVC will support the founding team led by Jesús Núñez,  president of the university, to ensure continued growth in Spain and internationally, both on campus and online.

The A&O team advising CVC was led by London-based leveraged finance partner Neil Sinha, with support from senior associate Nick Hallam and associate Tiffany Liow.  Spanish financing advice was provided by partner Ignacio Ruiz-Camara, senior associate Sara Sanz and associate Jaime Begara and Spanish public law advice was provided by senior associate Jose Luis Perez-Campoamor, with Luxembourg advice provided by partner Henri Wagner, senior associates Pierre-Henry Maroteaux and Thomas Drugmanne and associate Alexis Poisson.

The transaction represents the latest example of the breadth and depth of A&O’s market leading European leveraged finance practice. Earlier this year, A&O's European leveraged finance practice was ranked number one, by value and volume, across several categories in Debtwire’s 2018 Western Europe Leveraged Loans Legal Advisors’ League Table Report.
