Reform of UK competition regime: A&O responds to Government consultation

In summary, our view is that the UK competition regime is, for the most part, already robust and effective; it is also held in high regard internationally. We are not persuaded of the case for wholesale reform, although we accept that incremental improvements could be made in certain areas, notably in streamlining the market investigations regime, and the procedures for prosecuting antitrust infringements. Whilst the policy objectives of improving robustness of decision making, supporting the authorities in prioritising the right cases and improving speed and predictability are no doubt laudible in themselves, we see a serious risk in simply making change for change's sake.
