M&A Partner Joins Allen & Overy in New York

Allen & Overy LLP announced today that Stephen Besen has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the M&A practice.

Stephen is a versatile and experienced M&A lawyer and joins from Shearman & Sterling. He has 35 years of experience advising on public and private company mergers and tender offers, joint ventures, restructurings, private equity and other private capital transactions.

At Allen & Overy, Stephen will leverage his deep experience within the asset management, industrial, energy and infrastructure sectors to advise clients in both the public and private M&A markets. Stephen specializes in cross-border transactions, including in China, India, Latin America and the Middle East.

Over the course of his career, he has been recognized as one of the leading lawyers in corporate/M&A and private equity by Chambers USA and Legal 500. In 2008, Stephen was named “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer for his role advising SABIC on the $11.6 billion acquisition of GE Plastics.

Eric Shube, Head of the U.S. Corporate practice said: “Stephen is a well-respected M&A lawyer with deep experience and a proven track record in the market. We are thrilled to have him as part of the team.”

Richard Browne, Global Co-Head of the Corporate practice added: “Stephen has built an impressive M&A practice with considerable cross-border experience that fits very well with our global and U.S. M&A strategies.  His depth of experience and insight is a great fit for our international practice and a significant addition for our clients.”

Stephen’s joining follows the arrival of M&A partner Paul Burns in April 2018, as part of a strategy for continuing growth in the New York market.
