Hope and Homes for Children wins A&O Global Charity Partnership vote

More Allen & Overy staff than ever before have had their say in which charity we will support for the next two years. Hope and Homes for Children is the clear winner, receiving 55% of first choice votes and 35% of second choice votes. Over 2,500 people helped to select our new charity.

The goal of our partnership with Hope and Homes for Children is to raise GBP1 million and provide the charity with significant pro bono support to strengthen its work around the world. The first GBP500,000 of the money we raise will be spent in Nepal and India, where Hope and Homes for Children will help approximately 7,500 children and the second GBP500,000 will help to support their overall mission.

In India and Nepal, families suffering extreme poverty or displacement due to humanitarian crises are being actively targeted by networks of traffickers, who coerce them to give up their children to be placed into orphanages where they are exploited for profit.

In Nepal, 72% of the 567 orphanages are located in tourist destinations to attract the financial support from international visitors. Once inside an institution, children are vulnerable to being forced into modern slavery and further trafficking for physical or sexual exploitation.

Senior partner Wim Dejonghe said, “It’s fantastic to see so many people from across our international network taking part in this year’s Global Charity Partnership vote. Too few people know about the untold damage that orphanages do to children every day. Through this partnership, I am sure we can raise enough money and awareness to make progress in stopping institutionalisation for good.”

Mark Waddington, CEO of Hope and Homes for Children said, “We are over the moon to be chosen by Allen & Overy’s staff across the world to be their next Global Charity Partner. This partnership will help us tackle a hidden global crisis, enabling us to rescue children from Nepalese and Indian orphanages and reunite them with their families.

“Working with Allen & Overy and harnessing the incredible skills and expertise of your global teams will also help us to develop a landmark legal model to reform safeguarding of children globally, creating a true legacy that will positively impact millions of children worldwide.”

The partnership will formally launch on 1 November 2018.
