Balazs Sahin-Toth awarded prestigious IBA Pro Bono Award

Allen & Overy Counsel, Balazs Sahin-Toth, based in Budapest, has won the International Bar Association’s (IBA) prestigious Pro Bono Award, which each year is given to a lawyer who has shown an outstanding commitment to pro bono work and building a culture of pro bono as part of their legal career.

The award was presented at the Section on Public and Professional Interest Awards Breakfast at the IBA Annual Conference in Sydney today and recognises Balazs’ role as a leader in developing a pro bono culture in Hungary.  This includes his involvement in a wide range of pro bono activities, including as a trustee for PILnet, advising a range of NGOs, teaching at ELTE civil law department and conducting strategic litigation relating to Roma rights, including obtaining a landmark ruling against illegal school segregation. He is also working with a range of professionals on an award winning, Roma employment integration programme in Hungary.

On receiving the award, Balazs comments: “I am truly honoured and embarrassed. At the same time, I am of course very happy about the IBA Pro Bono Award as it is a good cause to pause and reflect on how important it is to do pro bono if we as lawyers want to lead a fulfilling professional life.”

Mark Mansell, co-head of corporate responsibility at Allen & Overy adds: “This award is testament to Balazs’ unwavering commitment to a range of pro bono work throughout his career.  His efforts have had a tangible and lasting effect on the lives of many and we are very proud and pleased for him on receiving this award.”
