Allen & Overy wins five awards at the Asian Legal Business Hong Kong Law Awards, 2018

Allen & Overy has won five awards at the Hong Kong Asian Legal Business (ALB) Law Awards, which honours legal excellence and the outstanding achievements of in-house counsel and law firms in Hong Kong.

Our wins included Restructuring and Insolvency Law Firm of the Year, International Arbitration Law Firm of the Year as well as Debt Market Deal of the Year in regards to the debt financing for the acquisition of The Center, an iconic Hong Kong commercial property.

For a second year in a row, A&O was awarded Corporate Citizenship Law Firm of the Year Award, recognising the continued efforts of the Hong Kong pro bono committee in bringing new and original ways of thinking to the legal challenges faced by those seeking access to justice but also providing access to education and employment to those less fortunate. Some of the Firm’s recent initiatives have included: 

  • Successful launch of the Smart Start programme in Hong Kong. Together with one of our clients, we hosted students from Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College and Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School for a two day workshop to equip the students with the skills needed to succeed in professional career 
  • Support for the momentous ruling by the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal on visas for same-sex couples in LGBT+ rights, QT v. Director of Immigration

Hong Kong managing partner Vicki Liu commented: “We are grateful to our clients and alumni, who partner with us on pro bono activities. We hope by continuing to facilitate collaboration between relevant stakeholders we can bring justice and fair treatment to people and communities who may otherwise be denied it”.

We are also honoured that Catherine Husted, A&O’s head of pro bono & community investment, Hong Kong took home the award for Woman Lawyer of the Year, which is indicative of her relentless commitment over many years in supporting a number of social causes, particularly helping displaced people, fighting online child exploitation and human trafficking, as well as supporting migrant workers. Catherine’s passion has successfully brought together teams of lawyers, support professionals, alumni and clients to share their knowledge, experience and provide assistance on international and local projects. Catherine is a former A&O partner, who worked in the London and Hong Kong offices for over 20 years advising on a wide variety of finance-related matters. In May 2015, Catherine took up the role as head of pro bono and community investment in Hong Kong.
