Our practice in Japan

We practise English and Japanese law in Japan through Allen & Overy Gaikokuho Kyodo Jigyo Horitsu Jimusho (Allen & Overy Tokyo).

Contact details for our office in Japan can be found here.

Professional regulation of Allen & Overy Tokyo

Allen & Overy Tokyo is a partnership regulated by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations in accordance with the Japanese Civil Code and the provisions of the Special Measures Law Concerning the Handling of Legal Business by Foreign Lawyers (the Special Measures Law).  The Special Measures Law permits Japanese qualified lawyers (bengoshi) to form a partnership with only non- Japanese lawyers who are registered foreign lawyers in Japan (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi).  In accordance with this legislation, Allen & Overy Tokyo is organised as a local partnership whose partners are only Japanese qualified lawyers (bengoshi) and non-Japanese lawyers who are registered foreign lawyers in Japan (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi).  For further details of the Special Measures Law see the English translation of the Special Measures Law at www.moj.go.jp/ENGLISH.

We can also undertake certain activities in relation to other investments which are limited in scope and incidental to our legal services or which may reasonably be regarded as a necessary part of our legal services.

Professional regulation of our lawyers

Bengoshi and gaikokuho jimu bengoshi are regulated by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and the Tokyo Bar Association.  Lawyers based in Japan who are qualified in other jurisdictions are also subject to regulation by the relevant regulatory body in their place of admission.  Further information about our lawyers and their qualifications can be found here.
