Alexander Bussey

Alexander’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, cross-border regulatory/internal investigations, and complex civil litigation.

He has experience representing individuals, corporates, and large financial institutions. Alexander has particular experience in disputes involving alleged securities or financial fraud, insider trading, and anti-money laundering compliance.

Prior to joining the firm, Alex clerked for the Honorable John G. Koeltl in the District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Representative matters

Hedge fund trader on insider trading prosecution arising out of alleged misuse of information concerning upcoming revisions to Medicare reimbursement rates issued by CMS in the Southern District of New York. This case was a first-of-its-kind case involving government information and prosecuting insider trading under the criminal Title 18 securities fraud provision. After multiple appeals, we successfully obtained a deferred prosecution agreement and the charges were ultimately dropped.

Northern European financial institution on anti-money laundering investigations by the US Department of Justice and by bank regulators in the US and multiple European jurisdictions focused on controls concerning foreign correspondent banking relationships and KYC/CDD measures applied to high risk and non-resident customers.

Global financial institution on an investigation into anti-money laundering shortcomings by SEC, U.S. banking regulators, and multiple European enforcement agencies, which was initiated upon suspicions of corrupt payments to CIS PEPs. Succeeded in obtaining declination from U.S. regulators.

Barclays Bank on commodities fraud and antitrust class action arising out of alleged manipulation of gold and silver benchmark manipulation in the Southern District of New York. Succeeded on motion to dismiss on silver benchmark litigation.
