With over five thousand people in forty-four offices, we're a business doing work of global significance.

We're one firm structured as seven global practices; over half of our transactions involve three or more jurisdictions, and nearly three-quarters of the work we do draws on the resources of two or more of our offices.

We've led the market by finding new ways of meeting the challenges that our clients face. To deliver the standard of support that they expect, we draw on a world-leading base of expertise and on a range of tools – such as our Legal Services Centre and our network of over 150 Peerpoint consultants.

Whatever your area of expertise and wherever your ambitions lie, we can provide you with the scope to develop your career and the challenges to help you realize your full potential.

U.S. Offices

In November of 1985, Allen & Overy opened up its New York office and became one of the first non-U.S. headquartered law firms to practice U.S. law outside the U.S.

Over the past quarter century, the New York office has grown to be the principal hub of Allen & Overy's Global U.S. practice.

Our Latin America practice and U.S. China group are also managed from the New York office. Both combine our broad sector knowledge, cultural familiarity and language skills to advise clients investing into and from Latin America and China.

In June 2011, Allen & Overy opened its Washington, D.C. office. With the addition of three new partners, the firm bolstered its leading U.S. Regulatory practice in order to help clients meet the challenges of a radically altered regulatory landscape in the U.S.

Both of our US offices provide a broad range of sophisticated legal services, while being fully integrated within the Allen & Overy network to meet the global needs of our clients.

What we offer

At Allen & Overy we set you off on what will be a stimulating and rewarding legal career. As you progress, we'll offer you all the support and resources to develop into a successful lawyer. The practice of law is constantly evolving, now's your time to evolve with it.

Summer Associates

When starting a career in law, being treated as a full-time associate makes a difference. Our summer associate program is a great way to experience our cutting-edge work and collaborative culture, and to work on top-quality transactions in various areas.

Summer associates may join the practice at any of our four main U.S. practice offices: New York, Washington, D.C., London or Hong Kong. As part of the program, you’ll gain real and valuable experience from day one, working alongside associates and partners. You’ll also be offered formal training programs that will provide broad exposure to our practice areas and supplement your day-to-day work. Below are a few examples of the programs offered throughout the summer:

  • Legal writing workshop
  • Working with in-house Counsel panel
  • Practice area presentations
  • Women in law discussion

Summer associates are not assigned to a particular practice area, so you’ll be able to work in all of the U.S. practice areas available in your office. We have a work allocation committee made up of multiple associates from various practice areas such as Corporate, Litigation and Project Finance and Restructuring who oversee work assignments.

You’ll meet with them regularly to discuss your projects and ensure you’re progressing through a wide variety of work. We’ll provide informal feedback throughout the summer and formal feedback in both a mid-summer and exit review.

But it’s not all work and no play. There’s plenty of time to socialize with other summer associates, lawyers and partners – broadening your knowledge of the firm, building your network and exposing you to the culture of the city where you work.

Entry level

For our associates to reach their potential, the scope of development we offer them is critical. At A&O, we work closely with you to develop your skills early in your career through a variety of training programs and resources. As an entry level associate, you and your entire U.S. first year class will usually start with a week of training in New York before traveling to your respective office. Your first week of orientation will include the following programs:

  • Multi-day intensive course specifically for new associates
  • Lectures on legal developments by partners and associates
  • Department-specific training sessions
  • Special courses on topics such as the art of communication, legal writing, risk management, law firm economics and more!

Our U.S. offices have a rotation system in place for our entry level associates. If you join without a permanent practice group placement, you’ll rotate through two departments for six months each during your first 12 months at the firm. You can opt out of the second rotation if you decide to make the department of your first rotation your permanent choice and the department agrees to accept that. For incoming classes, efforts will be made to enable associates to practice in their preferred group during the rotation process.

Training

One of the things our associates value most about being at Allen & Overy is the world-class training they receive. Throughout the year, we hold regular seminars for our attorneys to further develop their knowledge and skills, and we send our attorneys to external, practice area-specific programs as well.

In addition to learning practical skills such as commercial and strategic awareness, effective communication and efficient time management, you’ll participate in global training programs geared toward developing your business acumen at each step of your career.

We’re committed to career progression, and have established programs to encourage your advancement. We recently began a business skills training program for female attorneys called "Women Making Their Mark".

We’ve also developed "Owning Your Career", a career management program for mid-level associates. As you move through your associate career, you’ll have the opportunity to review your aspirations, explore your values, motivations and skills, and devise a plan to achieve your goals and take responsibility for your own career development and success.

Our culture

We work to attract, develop and keep the very best people - and we don't take them for granted.

All kinds of people work at Allen & Overy, but we have a few things in common. We're united by ambition and drive, and by the restless pursuit of excellence in everything we do. We foster a working environment based on collaboration and mutual respect, where everyone is trusted to do their very best work.

But as important as that work is, we know that it's also important for our people to have a life beyond it. Everyone at A&O is given the space and encouragement to pursue their interests and access to organizations and events where they can discover new passions. Diversity & inclusion

We recognize that people are different – in terms of visible things like age, gender, ethnicity and physical appearance, as well as underlying things like religion, nationality, social background and education.

Diversity is valued here. Everyone has the opportunity to join us, develop with us and fulfill their potential with us.

We want to:

  • Create a culture where everyone feels valued and included and respected.
  • Bring together teams of people with differing and complementary skills, ideas and experiences.
  • Ensure people from diverse backgrounds feel that they want to develop their careers with us.
  • Use the diversity of our people to develop creative solutions for our clients.
  • Support the evolution of a legal profession that is truly accessible to everyone, regardless of his or her background.

Pro Bono & Citizenship

With unrivaled depth of expertise and a presence in over thirty countries, we're in a position to effect positive change on pressing issues all over the world and help find solutions to society's most serious problems. Our pro bono and community work is focused on two major themes – access to justice and access to education and employment – and adapted to the needs and priorities of local cultures.

Last year 44% of our lawyers took part in pro bono work to a value of USD 22.9m – but we try and use the skills of all of our people to their greatest effect, whichever part of the firm they're from and whatever their area of expertise. Our people are encouraged to get involved as much as possible in volunteering, to take on responsibility, and to use it as an opportunity to develop their client-facing skills. You could find yourself working for organizations such as Her Justice, Reprieve and War Child.

The opportunities to progress, both personally and professionally, are endless. To find out more, download a copy of our Corporate Responsibility brochure
