An expansive future - a proposed merger with Shearman and Sterling
We’re on an exciting journey to create an even stronger offering for our clients and our people: In May 2023, we announced our proposed merger with Shearman and Sterling, with the intention of becoming a new global leader named Allen Overy Shearman Sterling, A&O Shearman for short. The proposed merger is subject to customary closing conditions, including a vote of the Partners of each of the respective firms.
As an integrated global law firm with a focus on quality, excellence and collaboration, we will be preeminent in all our markets and our combined revenues of approximately USD3.4 billion will make us the third largest integrated law firm in the world - and the only firm with U.S. law, English law, and local law capabilities in equal measure.
With a shared commitment to attracting and retaining the best people and an equal focus on creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace, we’re confident that this merger will further our efforts to leave a better firm for future generations as well as providing our people with exceptional career opportunities along the way. It reinforces our dedication to creating an environment where everyone can belong, and excel.
Pro bono and community investment
At A&O, we work towards functioning as a socially responsible business that positively contributes to society while being committed to our people and clients as well as the wider legal sector. Our pro bono and community investment (PBCI) initiatives continue to enable individuals and communities to access justice, social finance, education and employment around the world, while building the skills and perspectives of our people, strengthening our relationships with our clients and tangibly demonstrating our core values and culture.
We know that A&O’s PBCI work tackles the root causes of injustice as well as its consequences. Our work addresses structural racism, inequality and lack of inclusion, helping disadvantaged communities and individuals around the world to access their rights and to fulfil their potential. Last year 54% of our lawyers took part in pro bono work to a value of GBP 21.2m – but we try and use the skills of all of our people to their greatest effect, whichever part of the firm they’re from, and whatever their area of expertise.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
We all thrive when what makes us different is embraced. We aim to make progress by harnessing our differences, which is why diversity, equity and inclusion are some of our strategic priorities. We’re committed to supporting a culture that drives inclusion. Every day, we’re working hard to create an environment where everyone feels that they can bring their authentic selves to work. To be comfortable and confident to be who they are in the workplace. To feel like they belong. To be All In.
We know that when every individual feels like they belong, we're able to excel together and achieve more, which is why we're constantly striving to nurture a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. We continually listen, using tools such as focus groups, surveys, and input from our affinity groups to understand the wide range of experiences and barriers that our diverse colleagues face. And we hold ourselves accountable, with data and transparency at the heart of our strategy. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re not there yet. We’ll keep asking hard questions and making brave decisions until we are.
We have a number of network groups to help us drive this work. Globally we have A&Out – our award-winning network for our LGBTQ+ community, with over 150 members and 750 allies across the world. And AccessAbility, our global network for colleagues who have a disability or have caring responsibilities. Across the world we have local networks and affinity groups who focus on gender, race, faith and social mobility.
“Simply understanding the benefits of diversity is not enough to make the difference. In the real world, we need to act in a deliberate way to ensure that we create an inclusive working environment where everyone can contribute and progress.”
