What we do

Allen & Overy has been active in the Qatari market since the 1970s.

Over this time, Qatar has increased in importance, both as an integral part of the GCC markets and as a launch pad for investment in other parts of the world.

We opened our office in Doha in February 2010, having obtained a licence to practice from the Qatar Financial Centre. The decision to open an office in Qatar followed requests from a number of our Qatar-based institutional clients and a growing interest in Qatar from clients from across our international network.

The legal practice provides a comprehensive legal service to its clients, advising large companies, banks and government entities on their commercial and financial activities. Our Doha office advises on all aspects of corporate, finance (including bank finance, debt capital markets and all types of Islamic financing), domestic and international real estate and Qatari regulatory advice, as well as collective investment schemes.

Our lawyers are consequently exposed to a very wide variety of high-profile and quality work and have numerous opportunities to advance their skill-sets.

We are focussed on developing our offering in Qatar by recruiting top calibre lawyers to join the team. We are therefore always keen to hear from lawyers from a variety of backgrounds who are interested in joining Allen & Overy.

Practices in Qatar

Corporate and M&A

The Qatar office advises on corporate law, including domestic and regional mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, outward investments by Qatari clients, inward investment by international clients and commercial arrangements (such as agency arrangements) for international clients conducting business within Qatar. Because of the way Qatar's foreign investor laws are structured, we have particular expertise in advising on joint ventures to conduct business in Qatar between international clients and Qatar-based entities.

We are at the heart of the world’s banking and financial markets and advise leading Qatari and international banks on high-profile regional transactions. We advise on all aspects of finance law, including bank finance for both borrowers (both local and international banks), debt capital markets for issuers and managers and all aspects of Islamic financing (including Sukuks).

Litigation, Arbitration and Dispute Resolution

We have extensive experience advising on litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution matters throughout the region, including on a number of cases involving Qatar-based entities. We have handled a wide range of disputes across a broad spectrum of industry sectors including construction, oil and gas, power, water, engineering and professional services, finance and derivative products. Our Middle East team is also ranked in the top tier by Chambers & Partners for dispute resolution in the Middle East.

We are the market leader in projects and have played an important role in some of the major projects in infrastructure (roads, bridges) and energy (renewables, oil and gas) taking place in Qatar and across the region. We advise a wide range of clients both in the public and the private sectors, including governments, sovereign wealth funds, sponsors, financiers, ECAs and project companies.

Real Estate

Our knowledge of the global real estate and construction markets provide a tangible competitive edge for our clients, whether they are raising finance, acquiring, leasing or disposing of real estate, involved in construction projects or investing in funds. We are committed to understanding our clients’ strategic drivers and the way their businesses operate, which ultimately leads to cost efficiencies.
