Founded in 1989 and fully established since 1998, Allen & Overy Paris today boasts 150 lawyers and 36 partners.

Our continuing growth is based on the talent and proven experience of our staff combined with our technical expertise and pragmatic approach to each case, which is the result of in-depth knowledge of our clients' market and business sectors.

As well as being global advisors in business and finance law, we have become a strategic and preferred partner to our clients. The Paris office is looking for lawyers who have foreign professional qualifications particularly from the United Kingdom and the United States.

The members of the legal practice are extensively involved in a variety of social actions and spend a significant number of hours performing pro bono activities.

Our international secondment programme allows associates to join Allen & Overy offices throughout the world. After about two years experience at Allen & Overy, you will have the option of applying to be seconded to another Allen & Overy office for a period of six months.

We work closely with renowned specialists in our office involved in all areas including public law and the law of intellectual property in order to ensure our customers benefit from the most comprehensive and pragmatic approach.

The team is widely recognised notably in the telecom, life sciences, energy, consumer goods industries and financial institutions sectors. 

Corporate and M&A 

Our Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) team's expertise covers all phases of a transaction whether private or public. We have significant experience in acting on complex, high-value, cross-border work as well as a range of domestic transactions.

We operate on M&A work bringing together international experience and local knowledge. Our clients include major corporates, financial institutions and equity sponsors in many different sectors, such as energy, infrastructure, financial institutions, telecommunications, media and technology and life sciences. 

Our team relies on the breadth and depth of our expertise and proven track record on domestic, cross-border and multi-jurisdictional transactions. We are also a fully integrated part of the firm’s cross-border M&A capability. 

Employment and Benefits

Our Employment and Benefits team, led by partner Claire Toumieux, acts for its clients on a wide variety of employment-related issues, from providing general advice on individual and collective employment law issues, benefits (incentives and pensions) to litigation.

Lawyers from our team regularly advise on employment law matters relating to corporate transactions, particularly those arising in connection with mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing and restructurings, and any subsequent employment-related conflicts.

Our team advises on this wide variety of employment issues within all sectors and has significant experience in the financial institutions and life sciences sectors. The team advises on both French and international matters, benefiting from the knowledge gained from its integral role within the Employment and Benefits global practice. 

Environment and Climate Change

Our Environmental practice forms part of Allen & Overy’s global Environmental group and offers a full range of advice on environmental law and climate change matters in the context of mergers and acquisitions, financing and real estate transactions, both at the due diligence stage and in drafting complex contractual provisions for apportioning liability.

Our team also specialises in providing advice to corporate clients, banks, governments and public authorities, public-funded entities and utilities on all aspects of French environmental law (eg contaminated land, waste, water, asbestos, WEEE and RoHS, environmental taxes) and assists clients in their relations with the competent administrative authorities as well as in environmental litigation.

Particular areas of strength in Paris are:

  • producer responsibility and pollution, land contamination
  • environmental and planning permits for industrial facilities
  • greenhouse gas emissions, carbon capture and storage
  • nuclear (permitting, regulatory assessment, shipment of nuclear products, etc)
  • renewable energies (planning, permitting and environmental aspects)
  • WEEE and RoHS directives
  • waste management and shipment

Our Intellectual Property team has been involved in numerous landmark decisions in French intellectual property law in recent years. Our strong sector orientation in areas such as life sciences, high tech and media gives us an in-depth understanding of our clients’ commercial needs.

International Capital Markets

Our International Capital Markets (ICM) department, led by Hervé Ekué, is recognised for its involvement in some of the most complex and innovative local and international transactions. Advising national and international clients on a wide range of transactions, our ICM lawyers are qualified in French, English and U.S. law.

Our team was involved in a number of market firsts in recent years, including key innovations in matters related to the financial crisis or involving the management of sovereign risk. Our partners are known as leaders in their respective fields, with all of them rated in the top rankings of leading legal directories. 

We are supported by our global ICM group, facilitating a streamlined service across jurisdictions on cross-border transactions. 

Litigation, Arbitration and Dispute Resolution

Our market-leading team provides expert knowledge in both litigation and international arbitration. 

Our dispute resolution specialists are recognised experts in their field, covering all types of commercial and business-related disputes. From the very outset of a dispute, we focus on providing strategic and cross-border advice to promote our clients' interests. Part of that rests on our ability and drive to understand our clients' businesses and their corresponding commercial needs, as well as the tactical and procedural avenues open to them (both in France and internationally). 

Our lawyers are qualified in many different jurisdictions civil law and common law (and often both) and are fluent in a wide range of languages. That international culture gives further depth to our understanding of client needs. We can resolve their disputes efficiently and cost-effectively, whether in France or in an international forum. 

Our litigation experts also regularly represent and advice clients in the courts of Francophone Africa, in both commercial and white-collar matters. 


Our Project Finance team is involved in all energy and infrastructure sectors (electricity, oil and gas, renewable energy and infrastructure).

We advise both French and international investors, lenders, export credit agencies, development banks and governments on the development and financing of projects. We particularly advise on projects in France, South and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

Our team, led by partners Tim Scales, Christine Poyer-Rufenacht and Rod Cork, is comprised of lawyers specialised in projects and project finance. All the team is bilingual in French and English and some also speak Arabic, German, Spanish and Russian.

We work alongside the Public and Environmental Law team on the development of the French public-private partnerships (PPP) market. 

Public Law

Our Public Law team advises public authorities (state, public institutions, independent administrative and local authorities), commercial and industrial sector corporations and banks.

We operate in diverse areas and sectors, including public contracts (public-private partnerships, concessions and other contracts delegating public services, and public procurement), privatisations, public sector entities, sector regulations (energy, telecommunications, media and technology, life sciences, defence), litigation and arbitration.

We also offer a full range of expertise on all aspects of French environmental law. 

Real Estate

Our Real Estate team offers a global approach to issues in this sector. It offers expertise in transactional, tax, and financing matters.

Our team advises all players in the real estate sector throughout all stages of the life of a real estate asset: financing, acquisition, management and disposal. Thus, our team advises on all aspects of a transaction and consequently has full knowledge of the specificities of the real estate industry, its principal participants, as well as expertise relating to corporate law, financing of real estate assets, real estate tax law and environmental law.

In addition, for multi-jurisdictional transactions, our team can rely on our international Real Estate group. 


Our Regulatory team, composed of lawyers of the Public Law group, the Competition group and the ICM group, work with clients to find workable solutions to the complex regulatory problems that affect today's businesses.

Their expertise covers all aspects of antitrust and EU law, environmental and planning law (including contaminated land, waste management issues, product regulations and producer responsibility, climate change, environmental risk audits, environmental litigation), public procurement, public-private partnerships, concessions, privatisations, telecoms, TV and cinema issues, and data protection.

Our Regulatory team is also a market leader in the provision of legal and regulatory advice to insurers, financial institutions as well as to corporate entities in respect of regulatory issues related to the provision of financial services throughout Europe and transnationally.

Our Restructuring team has significant experience in advising all parties in relation to out-of-court work-outs and debt restructurings. We work together with the renowned law firm Santoni & Associés on complex restructuring issues (the refinancing of existing facilities, the restructuring of a single loan facility or the restructuring of a company's entire balance sheet, etc).

Our team has a also developed recognised expertise in advising all parties in relation to insolvency proceedings. We advice debtors, insolvency officeholders and all major creditor groups in relation to the key global and domestic insolvencies.

Such major insolvencies and restructurings are, in today's market, more and more complex and multi-jurisdictional. Our worldwide team of expert lawyers provide a fully integrated approach to the complex domestic and cross-border issues that such cases raise, working alongside our finance, corporate, employment, tax, environmental, regulatory, capital markets and litigation experts. 


Our Tax team is involved in all tax aspects related to the implementation of complex local or international transactions and restructuring in the following areas: capital markets, structured finance (including securitisation, asset and project finance), asset management and investment funds, acquisitions, property investment and restructuring.

We also advise our clients on tax audits and litigation. Our work combines recognised tax expertise with a thorough understanding of the associated legal mechanisms and practices.

Our Energy group in France comprises specialists in environmental and public law, corporate law, competition, regulatory, project financing and syndicated lending and advises a range of clients including large corporates, banks and governmental institutions. 

Our team is characterised by the diversity of its experience and clients. We have advised on numerous types of transactions in the power sector as well as the oil and gas sectors. This includes corporate work and joint ventures, regulatory, financings and capital market transactions.

Financial Institutions

Our Financial Institutions Group (FIG) in France has an unrivalled understanding of the financial services sector. Our dedicated cross-border team acts for France's leading banks, insurers, asset managers, brokers, investment funds and mutuals on their most important strategic transactions.

We have a strong track record in acting on complex, innovative multi-jurisdictional deals, using our international reach and our strong domestic practices in all major markets.

Our FIG team advises on mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, banking and finance, regulatory, tax, outsourcing and antitrust.  

Infrastructure and Transport

We have developed a specific expertise in the infrastructure sector on different types of participants: public corporations, investor groups or their members (traders, market makers or manufacturers), lenders (commercial banks or institutional lenders) or investors on the secondary market.

Life Sciences

Our Life Sciences practice in France advises its clients on all strategic commercial and corporate aspects, including mergers and acquisitions, regulatory, intellectual property, European law developments and antitrust matters. We also have strong expertise in contentious matters involving pharmaceutical and bioscience issues.

Our Real Estate group in France is managed by Jean-Dominique Casalta (transactional real estate), Jean-Yves Charriau (real estate tax) and Christophe Jacquemin (real estate finance). Working closely with the other departments of Allen & Overy, our Real Estate group focuses on the full range of real estate transactions and notably on:

Telecommunications, Media and Technology

Our Telecommunications, Media and Technology group in France offers a full range of services from private and public M&A, joint ventures, commercial contracts and regulatory advice, to financing and capital markets expertise.

Helping our clients implement laws affecting television and radio broadcasts and the code of electronic communications in France is one of our specialities. We advise the major French telecom operators on corporate and regulatory issues. We also help our clients in their relations with regulators (Conseil supérieur de l'Audiovisuel, Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications and Conseil de la Concurrence) and in their disputes before the administrative courts.

Our clients include some of the leading French players in telecommunications and cable, equipment and network suppliers, broadcasters, producers and equity and debt investors. We also advise public entities (the state and several large local authorities) and regulators.
