Advanced Delivery: Innovation in legal project management

Innovation in legal project management

Globalisation has increased the number of cross-border deals and cases we assist our clients with. These matters tend to be highly complex, requiring the co-ordination and management of many strands of activity and teams of lawyers.

Meanwhile, we recognise our clients want to find more effective, quicker and cheaper ways to process legal tasks, including managing multiple suppliers and acting as a one-stop shop to combine a range of legal services into an integrated, seamless whole – at the right price and with no loss of quality. This evolution in the legal market has resulted in project management moving from being merely important to an essential skill for today’s leading advisers. At Allen & Overy, we realise this is a significant challenge and have taken definitive steps to respond to it.

Our ethos of project management at A&O

Our objective is to deliver high-quality work on time and on budget by making the best use of our teams. Project management is crucial to this, and it’s a priority on all matters.

Our ethos of project management at A&O

Planning up-front saves significant time as the matter progresses and minimises the risk of unpleasant surprises. We:

  • invest time in understanding our client’s overall strategy and success criteria as well as the scope of work
  • create a clear plan that’s presented to the client in digestible form
  • draw up a comprehensive budget
  • agree up-front how the matter will be run, including understanding the client’s reporting requirements, allocating clear roles and responsibilities and agreeing how risks will be managed and decisions made
  • mobilise the right blend of core team members, specialists and jurisdictional teams.

This is about implementing the plan and remaining flexible in the face of any changes that occur along the way. We keep lines of communication open as the matter progresses to make sure that our client is fully aware of our progress, to ensure that any issues or risks are raised and handled and that there is financial transparency through regular fee updates.

Review and close

Following completion of the matter, we believe it is important that loose ends are tied up and that we capture our client’s feedback on how we handled the matter and then jointly share lessons learned to inform our future work with the client.

Implementing the ‘A&O way’ across the business

We have implemented an extensive programme across our offices to ensure that all of our lawyers are trained on the ‘A&O way’ of managing matters so that it is consistently applied across the A&O network.

Our dedicated Project Management Office has professional legal project managers who have developed advanced training and who provide support to our lawyers so that they are fully equipped to project manage matters. We also provide our lawyers with project management templates, guides and checklists so that they can be even more efficient in managing the work.

In addition, our legal project managers are assigned as dedicated project managers to our largest and most complex matters, where project management requirements are exponentially greater than on other matters. This allows our lawyers to be freed up to concentrate on the legal aspects of the matter. In this way, we are able to ensure that for all sizes of work our legal services are delivered on time, on budget, and are top quality, whilst keeping you completely informed and in control of key decisions.
