In March 2009 Philip Wood was appointed by the Queen as QC honoris causa.

Philip joined the firm as an articled clerk in 1967, was made a partner in 1974 and was head of the firm's Banking Department in the 1990s. He has 40 years of experience in an international law firm. He works in the firm full-time.

Philip is the author of more than 18 books on international finance, including nine books published in 2007/2008 on the law and practice of international finance.

He is an expert on cross-border law and comparative financial law. He has published a book of maps of world financial law which dramatically portray in colour the position of the world's jurisdictions on various issues relating to financial law.

He serves on the editorial board of a number of legal journals.

His role in the firm is to advise clients, in particular in relation to the following:

  • advice on matters of particular importance involving high reputational and other risks for clients and requiring special maturity of judgment
  • helping banks and others with the management of their legal risks
  • helping structure cross-border transactions which need a special knowledge of multi-jurisdictional law
  • expert opinions, e.g. in litigious or semi-litigious situations
  • assessing legal and "doing business" risks internationally
  • carrying out multi-jurisdictional surveys or surveys of a particular jurisdiction for clients investing in that jurisdiction
  • making medium-term predictions of legal trends so that firms can be prepared
  • advice on transactions within the areas indicated above.

He is establishing and managing a Global Law Intelligence Unit for the firm and its clients.
